Make Your Own Watercolors

Need more red paint?  We do.  We always do.  And by "we," I mean Gavin.  He is perpetually worried that we are running out of red paint, his favorite color.  In fact, if I paint with him, each dip I make into the red paint elicits a small gasp from him, followed by, "Can you please not use all the red paint??"

So when I came across this post on how to make your own water colors, I knew that we were in luck.

It's very easy to make.  Mix together:
  • 3 TBSPs Cornstartch
  • 3 TBSPs Baking Soda
  • 3 TBSPs Vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tsps Light Corn Syrup
Once the fizzing subsides, pour it into the container you will use for your paint (we got ours here - you get a dozen for $4!) and mix in the various food coloring of your choice.  Or, if you have a one color lover like me, mix in the color and then pour.  The blog that I got this from suggested that you mix in the color right away since it firms up quickly, though this wasn't an issue for us since we added the color at the same time as the rest of the ingredients.

Let it sit overnight to harden.

To be honest, I had my doubts about how well this would work.  But these paints are kind of awesome!

Now we worry no more about the red paint shortage in our house!

Happy Painting!!

  1. This is just perfect! My daughter is a little painter, in fact, my walls have become an art gallery to her superior artistic abilities. But she goes through watercolors so fast (You know, a tray a day, maybe two if I'm lucky).

I'm going to have to try this!!

  2. Holy moly!! That is a lot of paint!! You should snag some of the trays for this from Oriental Trading when they are having a free shipping sale. They aren't a bad deal from there, and then maybe you can make like 30 trays at a time :)
