If you have been hanging around Simple Joy for a while (so glad to have you!!), you know that appetizers are my absolute favorite. In my dream world, all of my dinners would be just trays and trays of appetizers that I could work my way through.

One of the easiest appetizers on the block is Pigs in a Blanket. These are so simple that your kids can make them for you! Keep the ingredients on hand, because these are so perfect to make when a gaggle of teenagers show up at your house looking for snacks.

How to Make Pigs in a Blanket

Here is a brief overview of how easy this crowd-pleasing appetizer is. The full recipe can be found at the bottom of the page along with measurements and instructions.

  1. Roll out the dough. Crescent dough is already cut into perforated triangles. Cut each triangle into 3 smaller triangles.
  2. Make the pigs in a blanket. Place a cocktail wiener in the crescent triangle and roll it up.
  3. Bake. Brush all the rolled pigs in a blanket with melted butter and sprinkle with kosher salt (not table salt). Bake until golden brown, about 12 minutes.

Chick Fil A Sauce Recipe

This simple Chick Fil A Sauce is just like what you get at your favorite restaurant. Put it on your favorite chicken sandwiches or just use it for dipping fries!

Dipping Sauces for Pigs in a Blanket

These are delicious as is, but they are also amazing dipped in some of my homemade sauces. Ketchup and mustard are great for these, but I am obsessed with both my Chick Fil A Sauce and my BBQ Sauce and they would pair perfectly with these pigs.

BBQ Sauce Recipe

This BBQ Sauce Recipe is easy to throw together and absolutely delicious! Fast to make and with ingredients you already have on hand, you are going to make this homemade bbq sauce all the time.

Variations

  • Add cheese. As we all know, cheese makes everything better. To add cheese to this recipe, grab 1/2 cup of finely grated cheddar and add it to the crescent roll before rolling.
  • Grab flavored lil smokies. They come in lots of different flavors these days and that’s an easy way to change things up! Or you could even use another pre cooked large sausage and just cut it down to size.
  • Sweeten things up. Drizzle a little honey on top of each roll before putting them in the oven.
  • Change up the dough. If you aren’t a fan of crescent dough or want to make these from scratch, substitute with biscuit dough or pizza dough.
  • Spice up the seasoning. Sprinkle them with everything bagel seasoning for an extra flavor kick.

Pigs in a Blanket Air Fryer

Crescent roll pigs in a blanket can be made in the air fryer instead of the oven. Preheat your air fryer and spray the basket with cooking spray. Place the prepared pigs in a blanket in a single layer and cook until golden brown, about 10 minutes. Repeat with the remaining pigs in a blanket.

Storing and Reheating

Crescent roll pigs in a blanket are best enjoyed fresh or the day they were prepared and baked, but can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, place in a warm oven until heated through. Always use your best discretion with leftovers. See below on how to freeze pigs in a blanket.

Freezing

This recipe can be made ahead and frozen. Freeze them unbaked by placing them in a single layer on a baking sheet and placing them in the freezer for a few hours. Transfer the frozen pigs in a blanket to a freezer-safe bag or container and freeze for up to three months. To bake, place on a baking sheet, brush with butter and top with kosher salt, and bake until golden brown.

FAQ

How long to cook pigs in a blanket?

Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Can you use hot dogs for pigs in a blanket?

Yes, you definitely can! Any pre-cooked sausage will work in this recipe. If you use hot dogs, I recommend cutting them in half and cutting each crescent triangle in half or using a whole hot dog with a whole crescent triangle for the best meat-to-dough ratio.

Can you make these ahead?

Yep! Just roll them up as instructed, place them on a cookie sheet, and cover with plastic wrap in the refrigerator until ready to bake. Brush with butter and bake as directed.

Been making these for years but I never add salt. I find between the dough, weenies, and butter they are plenty salty enough already. Best dipped in sour cream!
