I remember Gavin’s first newborn check up like it was yesterday, even though it was five and a half years ago.  I remember his pediatrician giving us the “newborn” spiel.  She probably could do it half asleep, I’m sure she’s done it no less than 70,304 times.
So it was towards the end of the speech that she told us how important it was for Gavin that we, his parents, still make time for each other.  That we still really try to make time for each other as a couple and make it a priority to make monthly, at a minimum, date nights out . . .
Our first date night was five months later.
{Once a month??  Really???  Who are the lucky jerks who can make that happen??}

Date nights still run pretty few and far between for us.  And, with all that Nathan and I have been through, we are still kind of killing it at this marriage thing.
But when we do go out, it’s a little like we are in our early twenty agains.  You remember your early twenties, right?  Where everything you did was hilarious to you, and idiotic to everyone else?  Yeah.  It’s just like that, piggy back rides and all.
Except that we are home by 10.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that our last date night was somewhat recently, and if you don’t follow along, check it out.  You can see how rare these dates really are!  Ha!
We went for drinks at this super fun restaurant in Milwaukee called, Maxie’s Southern Comfort.  They serve great Southern food (their fried green tomatoes are ridiculous and their gumbo is to die for!) but they also have a pretty amazing cocktail menu.  On that menu was a Jalapeño Margarita.  I didn’t end up getting it, because when I look at cocktail menu, I’m kind of like a kitty getting distracted by shiny things.  Besides, I figured this was something I could make at home.
And I did!  It was super delicious.  It’s sweet, but not too sweet.  Spicy, but not too spicy.  All the flavors balance each other out into one amazing and refreshing cocktail.
It packs a punch though, so proceed with caution!
Jalapeño Margarita
(Makes 2 Serious Margaritas)

  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lime juice (about two limes)
  • 1/4 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice (about one and a half small lemons)
  • 1/2 cup jalapeño infused tequila (recipe below)
  • 1/2 cup triple sec
  • 1 1/2 TBSP agave syrup
  1. Mix all the ingredients and serve over ice.
Jalapeño Infused Tequila
(Makes enough for the above recipe about one and a half times)
  • 8 oz mason jar
  • 2 jalapeños sliced (I removed some of the seeds and ribbing to lessen the heat a little)
  • tequila (I used gold)
  1. Put the jalapeños in the jar and top with the tequila.  Let sit for about 48 hours.  If you would like to make more than what this makes, go for it!  I don’t think that you need to increase the number of jalapeños unless you are doubling the recipe, and at that point I would only add one more.

I would just love this margarita. We are very lucky my parents live 15 minutes away! We get date night once a week in the summer and once a month when school is in. This would make a great drink for date night.
