How to Make Apple Pie Muddy Buddies

This is a brief overview of how to make this simple recipe. For the full recipe see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  1. Cook down the apple butter. This will help thicken it and remove some of it’s moisture, leading to a puppy chow that is more crisp and doesn’t go stale quickly.
  2. Continue making the coating. To the cooked down apple butter we will add cinnamon, vanilla and white chocolate. Then you will add in the butter.
  3. Coat the cereal. Use the coating to coat the cereal. Then coat it with powdered sugar.
  4. Let it all cool. It is essential to let it all completely cool before it is stored away.
  5. Make the streusel topping. Combine butter, brown sugar, and oats. Bake it, break it up and then toss it with the puppy chow.

Apple Butter

Apple Butter is one of my favorite fall treats. It’s the combination of apples, sugar, and spices that have been greatly cooked down. It is delicious on its own, on toast, or in different ingredients. It is super simple to make, and I have a great Crockpot Apple Butter recipe.

Storing

Apple Pie Muddy Buddies should be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Though I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it doesn’t last that long.

Muddy Buddies freeze very well! You can just pop the ziplock bag or container that you are storing it in in the freezer and keep it there for up to three months.

Ingredients

For Muddy Buddies

  • 1/3 cup apple butter
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cups white chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 8 cups chex cereal I used corn
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

For Streusel Topping

  • 1 stick of butter softened not melted
  • 1 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 cup of quick cooking oats

Instructions

  • Heat the apple butter in a small saucepan over low heat. You are doing this to cook off some of the moisture, so cook until it looks thicker, stirring consistently, about five minutes. You will see the streaks of water disappear.
  • Remove the apple butter from the heat and stir in the cinnamon and the vanilla until combined. Then stir in the white chocolate chips and return to the heat. Continue stirring until the chips are melted.
  • Stir in the butter until melted.
  • Pour the mixture over the cereal in a large bowl. Mix until it is equally distributed.
  • While it is still hot, add the powdered sugar a little bit at a time until the cereal is completely coated.
  • Transfer the cereal to two cookie sheets so that it can cool in a single layer.
  • To make the streusel topping, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Mix the ingredients together with a fork. It will be a little chunky, and that is okay.
  • On a parchment-lined baking sheet, spread half the mixture.
  • Bake the mixture for 8 minutes, but keep an eye on it. All ovens cook differently and you don't want it to burn.
  • Transfer the mixture (it will be in chunks) to a paper towel-lined plate. Let it cool completely and then break it apart into bite-sized pieces.
  • Repeat with the second half of the mixture.
  • After the muddy buddies and streusel topping have cooled completely, combine them and transfer to a container that can be completely sealed. Best when eaten within two days.

I made the Apple Pie Muddy Buddies with Streusel this week and it turned out great. That is until after it cooled and I put it in ziploc storage containers. The next morning it was chewy with very limited crunch. I used the Corn Chex…do you know where I may have went wrong?

Ugh! I’m sorry Kristie! Nothing makes me more frustrated than hearing one of my recipes didn’t work out for a reader! I hate to think of someone wasting their time and ingredients. This recipe is a little bit of a trickster. The two steps that are pretty key, and if changed even in the slightest effect the end result, are 1. making sure you cook the apple butter for long enough in the beginning for it to really thicken (and keep in mind that brands are different, so it could take longer for some brands) and 2. making sure it is completely cooled. Again, I’m sorry this didn’t work out for you!
