Nutella Magic Shell | Your favorite ice cream topping and your favorite flavor meet!
So since having Piper, things in my house for my older two have been L-A-M-E. Like we don’t go anywhere, we don’t do anything, nothing is fun. Ever.
In an effort to still be the “cool mom,” I’ve been trying to spice things up at home.
One way I decided to be cool lately was sugar. And lots of it.
So I made my kids an ice cream sundae bar after dinner one night! I opened up the blog cabinet, and it was like Mary Poppins opening her purse, only instead of a spoonful of sugar, it was more like a bucketful of sugar. And sprinkles. And hot fudge. And mini marshmallows. And mini chocolate chips. And maraschino cherries. And more sprinkles.
They were thrilled! #momwin
And then we had a four hour hurricane. #hurricaneplussugaredupkidsequalsdisaster
So the ice cream sundae bar is going to be a regular occurrence around my house now. Anytime I need a win, the sprinkles are coming out in FULL force.
Well the other day, I saw my buddy Dorothy post about DIY Birthday Cake Magic Shell. Umm . . . say what?? She is a GENIUS!
And it got me thinking . . . what other kinds of flavored magic shell can there be??
Basically magic shell is chocolate and oil. It’s just all in getting the right consistency so that it is a liquid in the container and a solid on the ice cream. When you do that with chocolate chips it’s a little easier than when you do it with something like Nutella, which is obviously already not a solid. Our first version tasted bad. Just really really bad.
This version has that wonderful Nutella taste, and although it doesn’t get hard like a shell and works much better as a drizzle than if you pour it, it definitely solidifies and is such a perfect ice cream topper. Which is great for two little kids who were recently introduced to the wonder that is Nutella.
- 1/2 cup Nutella
- 1 TBSP vegetable oil
- In a microwave safe bowl, combine the oil and Nutella.
- Microwave in 30 second intervals at 50% power, mixing in between, until fully combined. About a minute or a minute and a half.
- Once cooled, drizzle over ice cream.
- Store at room temperature.
This magic shell works best on ice cream right from the freezer. While it will solidify on the ice cream, it won't get quite the crunch that traditional magic shell does.
