Have you ever noticed that people in general have really strong feelings about the celebration of Thanksgiving and Christmas (for those who celebrate those holidays, that is).  Before Halloween, I asked on my FB page when people would be okay with seeing Christmas posts.  And most people felt pretty strongly that I should wait until after Thanksgiving.

The other day I turned some Christmas music on in my house, because my personal feeling is that both Thanksgiving and Christmas are great, and both can get my love all November and December long.  {Besides, they are holidays without feelings, not children arguing over who is the favorite.}

My whole family turned on me.  They told me I was crazy and told me to turn the Christmas music off.  I told them that there is no such thing as Thanksgiving music, and therefore the Christmas music was staying on.  Then I asked if they did or did not want dinner.

The Christmas music stayed on.

What you name food!  I’ve been criticized for calling my 15 Minute Mini Calzones, calzones.  And I’ve been yelled at for calling my Caramel Apple Dump Cake, a dump cake.  I also got a spirited email about my Rainbow Fruit Pizza.  It, apparently, should not be called a pizza.  People take their food definitions really seriously.

So I with absolute trepidation and an itchy finger on my email delete button, I offer up to you the Sweet Potato Chess Pie.

Here’s the thing.  I’ve never actually had a chess pie {gasp!}.  I first had a pie in the chess family when I made this Dulche de Streusel Apple Pie based that off this amazing pie from Something Swanky.  And that’s when my obsession with this style of pie kind of began.  I made a couple more with cookies, like this one and OMG this one.  And then I started to do some reading on what made a chess pie a chess pie and I started looking at different recipes.  They all seemed to have a couple things in common . . . butter, eggs, a little flour, and a bit of vinegar to cut the sweetness.  And I made this Orange Nutella Chess Pie.  It remains my all time favorite pie.  I literally ate every single piece.  Since then, I’ve made two more traditionalish chess pies, S’mores Chess Pie and now this.

So, long story short, I have absolutely no idea if I have any business calling this a chess pie.

What I do know, is that it’s reeeeeeeally good.  I love sweet potatoes, and I really think it’s sad that pumpkins are the vegetable that get all the fall dessert glory.  Next year it’s going to be the new food trend, Sweet Potato everything!

Sweet Potato Chess Pie

Ingredients

  • 1 pie crust
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 sweet potato (about 1 pound), baked and pureed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 TBSP vinegar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsps vanilla
  • 3 TBSPs all purpose flour
  • 5 oz marshmallows

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line a deep dish 9 inch pie pan with your pie crust.
  2. Whisk together the potato and melted butter. Then stir in all the remaining ingredients except the marshmallows. Pour it into the pie crust and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the edges are set but the middle has a little jiggle still too it.
  3. Take the pie out and dot it with the marshmallows. Turn on your broiler and put the pie back in, watching very closely. Broil until the marshmallows turn brown on top, about five minutes. When you take the pie out, the marshmallows will be standing up still all weird, but as the pie cools they will fall and make a nice toasted marshmallow layer.
  4. Let cool on the counter for a half hour and then completely in the refrigerator overnight.

    I had a problem. I don’t have any experience with sweet potatoes. So when I got home and realized it’s white and not orange? I was worried. I wasn’t sure if that is a “wrong” sweet potato? And I wasn’t sure how much I needed because there are all kinds of sizes of sweet potatoes, too??
