This Blue Cheese Dressing recipe is a favorite for good reason! This rich and bold salad dressing highlights the deep flavors of blue cheese in a delightful way, balancing the creaminess and acidity perfectly.

I love how simple and easy it is to make homemade salad dressings. They always taste better than the store bought version, and often I have all of the ingredients for them already in my pantry.

This Blue Cheese Dressing recipe, like my other dressings, uses ingredients you should already have on hand. The only thing I had to pick up from the store was some blue cheese. Instead of using buttermilk, we are using skim milk and some lemon juice. This achieves the same great taste and texture without the need for buying buttermilk.

You will love the creaminess of this great salad dressing.

How to Make Blue Cheese Dressing

For the full measurements, be sure to follow the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  1. Make the milk base: In a small measuring cup, mix together the milk, lemon juice, and garlic.
  2. Create the right texture: Combine the milk mixture and blue cheese crumbles in a bowl. Use a fork to mash the blue cheese into the milk. You are looking for a consistency close to cottage cheese.
  3. Finish it off: Add in the remaining ingredients – sour cream, mayonnaise, white vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper.

After you have everything mixed in, taste the salad dressing to make sure that it has enough salt and pepper. If it isn’t popping to your tastes, add just a pinch of each until you hit the right flavor.

What is Blue Cheese

Blue Cheese is made using cultures of mold that combine to create the blue color that you see throughout the cheese. It is sold in both blocks and crumbles and has a bold flavor and very creamy texture.

Using Low Fat Ingredients

For this recipe, and other creamy dressings, I would not recommend using low fat mayonnaise. It provides a sweeter taste to the dressing than what we are going for.

While low fat sour cream can be used for creamy dressings, please note that the full fat version will provide a bolder flavor.

Using Blue Cheese Dressing

This dressing is fantastic on a basic side salad as you see here. But I especially love it on my Wedge Salad. The iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, and chives pair perfectly with the dressing in this classic recipe.

This dressing is also fantastic for buffalo wings. I have a great recipes to make them in the oven, slow cooker, or air fryer: Baked Chicken Wings, Crockpot Wings, Air Fryer Wings.

Wedge Salad

Wedge Salad makes the perfect side dish for any main meal.

Storing Blue Cheese Dressing

Because of the dairy in this recipe, I only recommend that you store homemade blue cheese dressing for 4 days in your refrigerator.

If you want to cut this recipe in half, you can do that easily by tapping the serving size scale in my recipe card. It will alter all the ingredient amounts in the recipe card.

I made this recipe for the first time; it took five minutes. OMG! I will never go back to bottled blue cheese dressing again! This is an amazing recipe and will rival, or BEAT, any blue cheese dressing you’ve ever had.

Can I freeze this recipe..Can’t wait to try it!

    • Lisa Longley says

Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend freezing this one. Because of the sour cream, the texture will be really off once it thaws.

  4. Johann says

Can you use Gorgonzola cheese instead of blue cheese in salad dressing?

    • Lisa Longley says

I haven’t tried that, but I can’t think of a reason why it won’t work.

My mom recipe is exactly like this I have been making it for years. The only thing I left out was the vinegar. Thank you it now tastes exactly like moms.

Love this recipe. Very easy to make. Directions very easy. This is the one. I like to put A Good Blue Cheese dressing on a grilled steak & grilled cob on the cob. I don’t use store bought dressing. We always make our own dressing. Way too many chemicals in store bought foods.

  9. Elaine says

Can you use powdered buttermilk? If so, Then do I just omit the milk and lemon? But still add garlic?

    • Lisa Longley says

I haven’t tested this recipe with powdered buttermilk.
