My mom was always bringing people flowers, whether it was for holidays, because they weren’t feeling well, or just because she wanted to share a small piece of her amazing flower garden with them. It was one of the many ways that she showered others with kindness.

So let me share with you an easy flower arrangement that even my mom would have been proud to give. I saw this years ago, and I wish I could tell you where. All I can tell you is that it’s a genius idea, but definitely not mine.

Supplies for Thanksgiving Centerpiece

You only need a few things for this easy centerpiece. You can buy these for less than $10.

  • A small baking pumpkin
  • A small bunch of flowers.
  • Presoaked floral foam.

How to Make a Thanksgiving Centerpiece

  1. Cut open the pumpkin. Scoop out all of the insides, just as you would if you were carving it. You can discard the top of the pumpkin.
  2. Cut the floral foam to fit the pumpkin. It will need to be small enough to fit into the pumpkin, but big enough to hold all the flowers. It helps to use some of the scraps from cutting the foam, to squeeze between it and the pumpkin once it’s inside the pumpkin. It will hold the foam in place.
  3. Add the flowers one at a time. Remember when cutting flowers you can always cut them shorter, so start out with them longer. Save some of the leaves to tuck in around the edges at the end.
  4. Carefully fill the pumpkin with water.

Enjoying the Centerpiece

  • This centerpiece will last for about a week.
  • Changing out the water every other day will help the centerpiece last longer.

Using this Centerpiece

I love this idea as a hostess gift, or a slightly bigger version as a Thanksgiving centerpiece. Or an easier version where you just pop a potted plant in there.

But I especially love it as the centerpiece for a fall wedding! Can you imagine? Maybe with some small mason jars around the pumpkins with little tea lights?

  • Roast Turkey: I will never make a turkey a different way.
  • Stuffing: My family always double checks with me to make sure this will be on the table. It’s everyone’s favorite.
  • Pumpkin Pie: This is a fool proof recipe that you will use year after year.

I like your idea, only question is how long it will last? thank you

    • Lisa Longley says

I made this several years ago and it lasted as long as you would expect grocery store flowers to last, about four or five days.

  8. Deb D says

Love the idea, so pretty. I will be making this for a Thanksgiving centerpiece to take to my daughters house. Thank you!

  9. Vee Reed says

So the pumpkin will last about as long as fresh cut flowers?
I’m so excited to make these!!

    • Lisa Longley says

Assuming you get a pretty fresh pumpkin, yes! Think about how long pumpkins last after cutting them for Halloween. Only this time, the part that curls in will be hidden by the flowers coming out of the top, so you can get a little more time out of it.
