This Dark and Stormy Drink Recipe is going to quickly become a favorite! Like a Moscow Mule made with rum, this Dark and Stormy Drink will be something you want to sip on all the time!
Happy Friday my friends! We are entering one of my favorite food seasons. Game day! If you even try to tell me this isn’t a food season, I will fight you on it.
I absolutely love making food for game day season. It’s all so rich and delicious. Last week I gave you my Bacon Ranch Turkey Sliders, perfect and easy for watching the game with friends. Or my Cajun Shrimp Skewers? Give me 18 of those. Oooo! Or how about my Spinach Dip Recipe! I love a great dip recipe.
And if you are going to have all of that, you need the perfect cocktail to go with it. Let me introduce you to your new favorite for game day and every other day: The Dark and Stormy.
What is a Dark and Stormy Drink?
Did you know that the Dark and Stormy Drink Recipe is the national drink of Bermuda? I mean, if that alone doesn’t make you want one, I don’t know what will.
If you are a Moscow Mule lover like me, you will fall in love with this cocktail. It is just like a Moscow Mule, but made with dark rum instead of vodka. With the flavors of lime and ginger beer working so well together, you are sure to fall in love with this cocktail.
What is the Best Rum to Use in a Dark and Stormy Recipe?
The name Dark and Stormy comes from the dark rum that is used in this recipe. Unlike other cocktails that call for a white rum, like my Watermelon Rum Punch or my Dole Whip with Rum which call for white rum, this cocktail needs a nice dark rum. Whatever brand you buy for it, just make sure that it is one that you love. That is the best way to ensure this Dark and Stormy Drink Recipe comes out perfectly.
Ginger Beer With or Without Alcohol
In a lot of my Moscow Mule recipes I will get the question: Do I use ginger beer with our without alcohol?
The answer truly is: That is up to you.
Generally speaking, unless stated otherwise, when I write a recipe that calls for Ginger Beer I mean the kind with alcohol. I love the brand Crabbies, which you can see pictured here. It doesn’t taste overly boozy, but has a nice ginger taste to it. Some brands make a drink way too strong, and in that case I would look for a non alcoholic ginger beer. But truly, find what you like and stick to that.
You could also make a spin on this Dark and Stormy Recipe using ginger ale!
How to Make Dark and Stormy Cocktail
Given the carbonation in the ginger beer of this recipe make this a drink that you don’t want to make it in a cocktail shaker.
Instead, I like to combine all the ingredients in a tall glass filled with ice and give it a gentle stir to combine. Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy.
Other Spins on the Moscow Mule You Will Love
- My FROZEN MOSCOW MULES never disappoint, and they are way too easy to make.
- You can swap out the vodka for gin too! I love my MOSCOW MULE WITH GIN.
- I even swapped out the vodka for tequila an made a MARGARITA MOSCOW MULE!
